Cervical Spine Injuries with Anterior Discectomy and Fusion

ID: exh40179a
This stock medical exhibit depicts a C3-4 anterior cervical discectomy and fusion procedure. The first illustration is a sagittal view of the cervical spine showing a pre-operative disc herniation at C3-4 compressing the spinal cord. Also shown are disc herniations at C4-5 and C5-6 which are less severe and are not compressing the spinal cord. There are four steps of the operative procedure illustrated, beginning with the incision exposing the cervical vertebrae. The next illustration shows the removal of the C3-4 intervertebral disc material. Then using a high speed drill the C3-4 cartilaginous endplates are removed. Finally a bone graft is fit into the disc space and secured with a plate and multiple screws completing the fusion.
