Atrial-esophageal Fistula with Resulting Air Embolism of the Brain

ID: exh73120b
This stock medical exhibit begins with a sagittal view of the head and upper body of a male with a gastroscope inserted into the esophagus. An inset provides a closer view of the tip of the gastroscope, which his in the esophagus just behind the atrium of the heart. Air is shown being pushed by the gastroscope through a fistula between the esophagus and atrium and entering the blood stream. Next, an anterior view of the upper body shows the heart, brain, and the major vessels connecting the two. An inset shows the air traveling from the heart into small vessels in the brain and lodging there, preventing blood flow to parts of the brain.
