Cette animation médicale en 3D décrit le début d'une thrombose veineuse profonde (phlébite ou thrombophlébite) en présentant la formation d'un caillot dans une veine de la jambe inférieure. Alors que les globules rouges s'écoulent dans la veine, des cellules se déplaçant moins rapidement et d'autres éléments sanguins s'accumulent sur les valvules veineuses, en créant un caillot de sang stationnaire, ou thrombus, bloquant le flux sanguin dans la veine. Lorsque le thrombus s'expulse de la valvule, il est ensuite nommé embole, et circule à travers le cœur et les poumons. La dernière section de l'animation présente l'embole logé dans le tissu pulmonaire pour former un embolisme pulmonaire potentiellement fatal.
