Retained Surgical Gauze with Abdominal Complications

ID: exh65314
This exhibit begins with one large anterior cut-away view of the male abdomen representing the post-operative condition following the initial colostomy procedure. It is clear in this image that, although the large intestine has been divided, that the small bowel is completely normal. The large piece of gauze and tape is shown in the mid-lower abdomen. Next, two enlarged views of the lower abdominal region illustrate the subsequent conditions. First, one image shows the pre-operative condition prior to the second surgery with the gauze and tape wrapped around loops of small bowel all intertwined in an adherent mass of scar tissue as described in the operative report provided. Also, one dramatic intra-operative image illustrates the resection of the adherent bowel loops.
