Complications from Obstructed Airway

ID: exh47502b
This stock medical exhibit compares normal respiratory anatomy of a healthy individual to that of an individual with an obstructed airway. Two anterior cut-away views of the female figure and detailed insets of the brain and lungs are used to demonstrate the comparison. The normal anatomy shows healthy brain and lung tissue with ample oxygen. In addition there are arrows indicating the path of oxygen in through the trachea, through the lungs oxygenating the blood to the heart and from the heart out to the brain and the rest of the body. The figure demonstrating the effects of an obstructed airway shows damaged brain and lung tissue with low oxygen saturation. A large food bolus is located in the trachea obstructing the airway. Smaller food particles pass into the lungs leading to aspiration pneumonia. Overall there is a bluish-purple color of the skin due to lack of oxygen in the blood.
