This stock medical exhibit shows C4-5 and C5-6 anterior discectomy and fusion in a series of illustrations. The first two illustrations show the post-accident condition in lateral views of the cervical spine, including a C4 osteophyte and C4-5 and C5-6 disc herniations compressing the spinal cord and nerve roots bilaterally. The third illustration shows the post-accident condition in a superior view of C6, including stenosis of nerve roots bilaterally, anterior flattening of the spinal cord and a C5-6 disc herniation compressing the nerve roots bilaterally. The fourth illustration shows the first step in the procedure, in which an incision is made to expose the cervical vertebrae. The fifth illustration shows the incision and removal of the C4-5 and C5-6 intervertebral discs. The sixth illustration shows the performance of bilateral foraminotomies at C5 and C6 to decompress the nerve roots. The seventh illustration shows the decortication of the endplates and the placement of the tricortical grafts into the C4-5 and C5-6 interspaces. The eighth illustration shows the placement of a plate and screws into the cervical spine to complete the fusion.
