Progression of Sphincteroplasty Failure

ID: exh65128-nl
This stock medical exhibit depicts the progression of a sphincteroplasty failure. The first image is a side view of a female body with a box around the area of injury. The remaining four images are close-up, cross-sectional views of this area. The first of these images shows the pre-operative condition where the anterior anal sphincter muscles are torn. The second image shows the immediate post-operative condition with sutures and gauze used to treat the tear. The next image shows the subsequent condition with infection and purulence surrounding the dressing. The final image shows the eventual condition with breakdown of the sphincter repair and formation of scar tissue.
