Maternal and Fetal Circulation (Maternal-Fetal Exchange)

ID: exh6073b
This set of medical illustrations depicts maternal and fetal circulation at the point of exchange. The first image shows the baby in utero, including the uterus, uterine membrane, placenta and umbilical cord. The second drawing is an enlarged cut-away view of the umbilical cord where it meets the placenta. This image shows the maternal blood supply, which contains oxygen, flowing into the placenta and around the fetal vessels. Oxygen from the maternal blood supply passes through the blood vessel walls and into the fetal blood vessels, which carry the oxygen through the umbilical cord into the fetus.
